Supporting Students with Diabetes: Free Education Session for School Nurses

Diabetes Foundation’s mission is to improve the health and wellness of individuals living with or at-risk of diabetes through equitable, accessible, compassionate, high-quality care.

Caring for students with diabetes in a school setting requires confidence, up-to-date knowledge, and practical strategies that work in real time. To support school nurses in this essential role, the Diabetes Foundation offers a free education session and School Nurse Program designed specifically to strengthen diabetes care in schools.

This program was developed through collaboration between endocrinologists, certified diabetes educators, dietitians, and experienced school nurses, bringing together clinical expertise and real-world school-based experience. The goal is to equip school nurses with the tools they need to safely and effectively support students living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

What the Program Offers

The training focuses on the day-to-day realities of managing diabetes in a school environment. School nurses gain practical, actionable strategies to help support students, including:

  • Understanding blood glucose (BG) targets and helping students stay within range

  • Responding confidently to high and low blood sugar episodes

  • Recognizing trends and patterns in glucose levels

  • Collaborating effectively with families and healthcare providers

  • Creating a safe, supportive learning environment for students with diabetes

These skills help school nurses make informed, timely decisions that directly support student health and academic success.

Accredited Training with CEU Credits

This education session is accredited through the ADCES, and participants are eligible to receive 2 free continuing education unit (CEU) credits upon completion.

Why This Training Matters

Students with diabetes face daily challenges at school—from managing meals and physical activity to responding to unexpected changes in blood glucose levels. School nurses are often the first line of support in ensuring students remain safe, included, and ready to learn.

This program is designed to go beyond basic education by offering real-world guidance and ongoing professional support, helping nurses feel confident in their ability to manage diabetes care effectively.

When school nurses are well-trained and supported, students benefit through improved safety, better glucose management, and a more positive school experience overall.

Join the Program

School nurses are invited to attend this free, accredited education session and earn 2 CEU credits while gaining valuable, practical skills in diabetes care.

Together, we can help ensure that every student with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes has the support they need to stay healthy, confident, and ready to learn.
