Excellence in School Diabetes Care For New Nurses: Part 1

0 Going

Whether you’re a new nurse or a newly certified school nurse, caring for a child with Type 1 diabetes can feel overwhelming. Diabetes technology continues to evolve, treatment recommendations are updated regularly, and every child’s needs are different.

The Diabetes Foundation’s FREE Nurse Type 1 Diabetes Education Program was created to give you the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence to provide safe, effective care throughout the school day.

During this training, you will learn how to:

  • Recognize and respond to diabetes-related emergencies with confidence
  • Support students using insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors (CGMs)
  • Interpret glucose patterns and make informed decisions to help students stay healthy
  • Understand the emotional and psychosocial challenges students with diabetes face every day
  • Partner effectively with families and healthcare providers to create a safe school environment
  • Apply the latest 2026 American Diabetes Association recommendations for children and adolescents with diabetes

All school nurses who sign up and attend both Part 1 and Part 2 will be entered into a raffle to receive an exclusive training for your school:

  • Provided by DF’s lead diabetes educator
  • Engage staff in learning to recognize the signs, symptoms, and potential complications of diabetes so they can promptly inform you of any concerns and support timely intervention.
  • Offer support to students in a variety of settings, including classrooms, after-school activities, school buses, and other school environments.

As a school nurse, you are often the first line of support when a student experiences a diabetes-related issue. The education you receive can make the difference between a student merely getting through the school day—and thriving academically, socially, and physically.

The content is informed in part by the “Diabetes Essentials for Nurses” program and is further strengthened by integration of the American Diabetes Association’s 2026 recommendations for children and adolescents with diabetes, ensuring alignment with current standards of care.

Please note that continuing education units (CEUs) are not currently offered for this program.

Once registered, please check your spam folder for an email from the Diabetes Foundation, as your school administration email settings may send us to spam or junk. Thank you!

Please RSVP or contact DF today at (201)444-0337 for more information or to register by phone.
