Budget Friendly Shopping & Preparation Ideas

Life is expensive. Health is expensive. Foods that are deemed “healthy” are often expensive. However, there are some tips we can provide to help you make better choices for you and your family even if you are on a tighter budget. Bonus – these 7 tips will not only save you money but also time and help to reduce food waste.

  1. Check your panty, fridge and freezer before heading to the grocery store. Use google search to find recipes around the items you may be interested in cooking with that week – for example, “recipes that include lentils”.
  2. Freeze foods that you cook in bulk. Label them with the date and the recipe name and even label the time you plan to use the dish (for example: Thursday, June 30th – dinner)
  3. Include some meatless meals 1-2 times per week. Typically, whole grains, lentils, beans for example cost less than eggs, chicken, meat, and cheese.
  4. Use apps like flipp or ibotta to make a grocery list and to save on shopping
  5. Shop store brand vs name brand whenever possible
  6. Use the store app if it’s a store that has its own – this will result in shopping more sale items
  7. Buy produce that is in season locally or that you can buy directly from the source – go to farmers markets in fall, spring and summer
