Amputation
Diabetes is a leading cause of lower limb amputations in the United States if blood sugar goes unmanaged. Knowing the facts can support your health.
An amputation is the loss or removal of a body part. Lower extremity amputation is a complication of diabetes. If diabetes is not well managed it may lead to poor circulation or reduced blood flow from plaque buildup which is called Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). PAD leads to poor wound healing and may eventually cause infection which can spread. To stop the damage, amputation may be the only solution.
Also, diabetic neuropathy, which is nerve damage, caused by high blood sugars over time increases risk of skin sores or ulcers, especially on the feet. Those sores or ulcers can worsen and may become infected eventually leading to an amputation of the lower limb.
