Are you at Risk?

So many of us live stressful, busy lives. That hectic lifestyle can take its toll on our health—including putting us at risk for prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. In fact, four out of 5 people in the U.S. who have prediabetes don’t even know it!

Approximately 645,000 New Jersey adults are diagnosed with diabetes, and the vast majority (95%) have type 2 diabetes. However, prediabetes and diabetes affect people of all ages, from older teens to seniors. If left untreated, diabetes can be life-threatening . . . but you can manage it and modify your risk. We encourage you to take action now and get screened to see if you are among the 80% of people who actually have prediabetes and don’t know it. What is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes is when someone’s blood glucose (sugar) level is too high but not high enough yet for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Early detection and lifestyle changes are critical, as prediabetes may progress into type 2 diabetes quickly without treatment. You can find out if you have prediabetes with a simple A1C screening test. If your A1C range is within 5.7 to 6.4%, you may be able to delay the onset of type 2 diabetes or avoid it completely with some lifestyle modifications.

About 34% of New Jersey residents have prediabetes. Nationwide, 80% of people with prediabetes don’t know they have it.

ARE YOU AT RISK?

You could be at risk if:

  • You are over 45 years old
  • You have a low physical activity level, and are at a higher weight
  • Diabetes runs in your family
  • You had gestational diabetes or gave birth to a baby weighing more than nine pounds
  • Diabetes runs in your family

Race is also a risk factor.

Know Your Risk. Get Screened

Knowing for sure is the first step to better health. Take a minute and take the risk test now to see where you stand.

Symptoms of
 Type 2 Diabetes

Right now, 25% of people in the U.S. are unaware they already have type 2 diabetes–a dangerous condition. The CDC predicts that if trends continue, by 2050 that number will increase to one in three (33%) people with full-blown diabetes. If you have any of these symptoms, visit your healthcare provider to get an A1C screening or call the Diabetes Foundation to get an appointment with a local provider.

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Numbness or tingling in hands or feet
  • Frequent infections
  • Slow-healing sores
  • Unintended weight loss

Type 2 diabetes can lead to vision problems, heart disease or stroke, nerve damage, hypertension, and mental health issues. Know your risk. Get screened. (Symptoms do not mean that you have developed the condition but you may be at high risk for diabetes or other conditions.)
