He\, like many people\, was unaware of the symptoms and complications of type 1 diabetes. He has suffered from a number complications including retinopathy and renal failure and has been treated on dialysis twice for several years. Fortunately\, he has had 3 transplants\,  including a pancreas to help him live a healthy life. He says “Diabetes has taught me the values of life and has shaped me into the person I am today.
